Today was our first really large snow storm. We've already had four or five dustings since the beginning of October. I am glad it is snow and not freezing rain. That is definitely scarier to drive in. School rarely ever closes for snow storms which is no big surprise. The campus is one big slushy mess but there are a lot pedways to avoid going outside too much. Don't worry mom, I'm taking 1000 IU of vitamin D/day and additional in my mulitivitamin since I get very little sun exposure. I'm becoming a pro at driving in less than optimal conditions. I've skidded minorly a few times, but I'm getting the hang of driving on slippery roads. A little snow never stops a Canadian. Despite the flurries we had last night for Halloween, we had a respectable amount of trick or treaters. We still have candy left, but I'm not complaining.
Every now and then I learn something Canadian. For example, yesterday I learned that they call Veterans Day, "Remembrance Day." They wear red flower pins called poppies. It is celebrated on the same day as US Veterans Day. I kind of like the term Veterans Day because remembrance day is so vague and it doesn't tell anyone who is being remembered.
My family continues to have no power nearly four days after Hurricane Sandy. I had a person I used to go to high school with check on my parents after my sister nor I could get a hold of them. I learned that many people had no cell service, only Verizon and text messaging. My parents have neither of those things. I was glad to learn they were doing well and had offered my friend food and good conversation. Such good Jewish parents! Well I have to wrap this up because my evening class starts soon.
