Pickin' Berries

We have a very short growing season but when fresh fruits and vegetables are available, it's such a treat.  So far this summer we've picked saskatoon berries and raspberries.  Saskatoons taste much like blueberries but they are a bit more tart and have a tiny seed that is edible.  Saskatoons are native to the Canadian Prairies, Northern Canada, BC, North Central US, and Alaska.  People up here use it to make jams as well as pies.  I doubt I'll be venturing in the jam making domain.  It looks like it takes some times.  I'm all about the pies and cakes though.  Saskatoons seems to last a long time in the refrigerator than other berries; there are some we picked about 3 weeks ago and they still are plump and fresh.  Last week, when Sarah was over, we picked raspberries at a local farm about 20 minutes from the house.  This was both of our first time picking raspberries.  The season I was told lasts until Labor Day or the first frost.  I'm hoping to go again with Mitch because they taste so delicious.
